Connecting the WE120 to a computer

1. Overview

The WE120 can be connected to a PC or Laptop through a USB mini cable or a RS-232 serial cable.

The procedure varies according to the Operating System.

2. Windows

2.1. Serial RS-232

  1. Launch Genesys.
  2. Turn-on the WE120.
  3. Connect the WE120 to the PC using a serial cable. If the computer does not provide a serial port, it will be necessary to use an USB-RS232 cable converter. Nethix recommeds the use of the Aten UC232A converter.
  4. Install the driver provided in the CD inside the converter package.
  5. After the driver installation, the WE120 will be ready for communicate with the Genesys.

2.2. USB

2.2.1. Windows XP

  1. Launch Genesys
  2. Download the USB drivers and extract them from the file. Do not connect the WE120, yet.
  3. Open the directory where the drivers where decompressed.
  4. Execute the install.bat file.
  5. A window will appear asking if the file must be executed. Click on Execute.

  1. A terminal window will be opened asking to disconnect the Virtual Com Port. If the WE120 was erroneously connected, disconnect it and press any key.

  1. Click Continue when asked for the driver installation.

  1. Press any key to close the terminal window.
  2. Turn-on the WE120
  3. Connect the WE120 using an USB mini cable.
  4. The Install new hardware guide window will be displayed. Select the option No, not now and press the Next button.

  1. In the new window, select the option Install the software automatically and press the Next button again.

  1. A window asking a confirmation for the driver installation will appear. Press the Continue button.

  1. By clicking on the Start button and the Execute… button a new window will appear. Write in the text field the string compmgmt.msc and press OK. In the menu on the left, in the System Utilities category, click on the Peripherals management. The peripheral and COM port assigned to the WE120 can be seen in the Ports (COM and LPT) category.

  1. At this point, the WE120 is ready to communicate with the Genesys application.

2.2.2. Windows 8

  1. Launch Genesys.
  2. Download the USB drivers and extract them from the file. Do not connect the WE120, yet.
  3. Open the charms bar and click on Settings.

  1. Select the Modify PC settings option.

  • Windows 8:
  1. Select the General optional in the left side menu. Then, in the Advanced startup click on the Restart now button.

  1. The PC is restarted in the Advanced Startup mode. Select the Troubleshooting option.

  1. Select the Advanced options option. Then, in the next screen, click on the Statup settings.

  1. In the next screen, select the Restart button in the bottom right.

  1. The PC is restarted in the Advanced Startup mode. A new screen with 9 options is displayed. Select the option Disable driver signature enforcement with the function key F7.

  1. The PC is restarted normally. Login with an administrator account, open the directory where the WE120 driver was extracted, right-click on the spansionusbvcomm.inf file and select the Install option from the drop down menu. In the execution confirmation window, click on the Yes button.

  1. A window is displayed asking to install the driver even if it’s not signed; click on Install the driver software.

  1. In the operation finished window, click on the OK button.

  1. Turn-on the WE120.
  2. Connect the WE120 through an USB mini cable.
  3. By right-clicking in the bottom-left corner of the screen, select the Devices management option and then the Ports (COM and LPT) drop-down menu. The new device with its associated COM will be visible.

  1. If there is a Virtual Comm Port device in the Other devices category, it means that the driver was not recognized. Rigth-click in the device.

  1. In the drop-down menu, click on the Update software driver… option.

  1. In the new window, click on the Search automatically an updated driver. After the search procedure, the driver will be ready to use.

  1. At this point, the WE120 is ready to communicate with the Genesys application.

2.2.3. Windows 8.1

Currently, the USB can only be used for configuring the WE120, but it cannot be used for updating the firmware.

3. OS X

3.1. Serial RS-232

  1. Obtain an USB-RS232 cable converter. Nethix recommends the Aten UC232A converter.
  2. Launch Genesys.
  3. Turn-on the WE120.
  4. Connect the WE120 to the Mac using the USB-RS232 cable converter.
  5. Install the driver provided in the CD inside the converter package.
  6. Install the additional PL2303 driver needed for recongnizing the USB-RS232 converter.
  7. The WE120 will be ready to communicate with the Genesys application.

3.2. USB

  1. Avvaire il Genesys.
  2. Accendere il WE120
  3. Collegare il WE120 al Mac tramite cavo USB.
  4. The WE120 will be ready to communicate with the Genesys application.

4. Linux

Currently, the USB can only be used for configuring the WE120, but it cannot be used for updating the firmware.
