1. Overview

Some applications may require a higher number of inputs and/or outputs as those already available on the WE500 and WE300. In such a case it’s possible to expand the WE500 and WE300 with additional digital outputs/inputs and analogue outputs/inputs, by adding expansion modules of the XP500/ETH line. These expanders can be easily installed and configured, following the user-friendly procedure available inside the webinterface of the WE500 and WE300.

The XP500 expanders communicate with the device through Modbus RTU Protocol on RS-485 and are all slave, for this reason it’s possible to connect to a single device several expanders, that may also be used with any other Modbus Master device.

2.9. Combo

The Combo module is the most complete expander in the range and allows to configure the following:

  • 1 universal analogue input (tension/current/temp.probe)
  • 1 analogue input in tension or current
  • 2 analogue outputs
  • 3 digital inputs
  • 3 digital outputs one solid state and two relay

The expander communicates through Modbus Protocol on RS-485.

3. Installation and configuration

The web-interface of WE500 and WE300 offers a very easy and rapid guided procedure for the installation and configuration of the expander.

The guided procedure, available on the section 3.6. Modbus expansions, is the following:

  1. Go to the Administration -> Modbus -> Expansions page of WE500 and WE300
  2. Click on the tab New
  3. It’s now required to select the desired expansion model. The models of XP500 range are:
  • 4 AI - I
  • 8AI - I
  • 4AI - V
  • 8AI - V
  • 4DI - 4DO
  • 8DI - 8DO
  • 12DI
  • 4T

  1. After selecting the model and clicking on the tab Next, it’s required to set the expander on INIT state. Nel pragrafo 4. INIT mode è spiegata la modalità INIT dell’espansione. On paragraph 4. INIT mode is explained the INIT mode of the expander.

  1. Once made the bridge with turned off device, click on tab NEXT. It’s now required to turn on the expander. Make sure that the supply voltage is within the right range

  1. Once the device is powered, click on Next and see how to make a proper connection of the RS-485:
  • From terminal A of WE500 to terminal D+ of XP500
  • From terminal B of WE500 to terminal D- of XP500
  • From terminal GND**of WE500 to terminal **GND of XP500

  1. Clicking on Next it’s now displayed the configuration page of the expander. All expanders have a part called Expansion where the following positions must be configured:
  • Name: the name to be assigned to the expander for an easy identification.
  • Client address: the Modbus address to be assigned to the expander at the end of the configuration.

Some expansion modules, as for instance the Combo, have a section called I/O configuration, there is requested to enter the configuration mode of inputs and outputs. For the Combo it’s required to configure the 0 analogue input and the 1 analogue input.

  1. Clicking on Save the device will configure the expander and create a new Modbus network on serial RS-485 (if not already available), the new Modbus commands for the inputs reading and the new variables for the visualization of the inputs/outputs, that will be available in I/O configuration

Hint

The commands and Modbus networks created by the automatic procedure cannot be modified, on the other hand it’s possible to change some parameters of the variables: Name, Scaled Minimum value and Scaled Maximum value. For further information on the meaning of such parameters it’s possible to read the manual of the master device (WE500 and WE300)

Warning

For the application of XP500 on devices different from WE500 and WE300 you’re requested to contact Nethix.


4. INIT mode

The INIT Mode allows to set temporarely the expander on a known state, in order to set a new Modbus address, having lost the previous one

Known status:

  • Modbus address: 1
  • Baudrate of the serial port: 9600
  • Data bit of the serial port: 8
  • Parity bit of the serial port: No
  • Stop bit of the serial port: 1

To set the expander on INIT:

  • Power off the expander
  • Create a bridge with a wire between the terminal GND and the terminal INIT of the expander.( In case of a Combo expander connect V- with INIT)
  • Power on the expander
  • Now the expander is on mode INIT and can be configured.
  • To escape from the INIT mode, it’s necessary to power off the expander, eliminate the bridge made previously and power on the expander again.

5. Warnings

  • This device is only suitable for being installed by a qualified operator
  • Nethix is not responsible for improper use and/or its side effects

not_recyclable The product shall not be treated as household waste. It shall be instead handed over to an appropriate collection point for the recycling of electrical and electronic products. For further information about recycling of this product, contact the local city office and/or the local waste disposal service.


6. Warranty and support

Nethix warrants to the buyer that the product will be defect-free within two years (24 months) from the date of purchase.

During warranty time, and against presentation of purchase invoice, the product will be repaired or replaced, at Nethix’s discretion, without any additional costs as regards spare parts and repair, if the damages are proven to be manufacturing defects.

Warranty will be voided if the product has not been used properly.

7. Return and repair

Product return to NETHIX must be previously authorized, requesting a RMA number.

Please send an Email at Nethix containing all following information:

  • Complete customer’s name and address
  • Distributor’s or Reseller’s name and address
  • Date of purchase
  • Product P/N and S/N as displayed on the product or the package
  • Detailed description of fault and/or reason for return

Nethix will communicate the RMA number, in order to start the return procedure of the product. The delivery of the goods shall be arranged DDP at Nethix premises. Products returned without factory seals will be automatically treated as out-of-warranty repair services.
